Risk management strategies for climate change adaptation in agriculture in Kenya

The project helped smallholders, processors and marketing enterprises throughout selected agricultural value chains appraise climate risks, select or develop suitable adaptation strategies and implement these. Agricultural extension services, insurers and district administrations were key partners in implementation. The agricultural extension services received training that places them in a position to advise farmers on the impacts of climate change. In dialogue with insurance companies, the project assessed the economic potential of insurance products; if assessments were positive, the further development of such products were stimulated. In parallel, farmers were informed about the costs and benefits of weather-based insurance. Relevant district bodies were involved in the processes, and received advice on how to integrate adaptation measures in development planning. In addition, the project developed a method for innovative results monitoring that will be able to capture the improved adaptive capacity of farmers.
