RZD Energy Efficiency Programme

The project supported Russian Railways (RZD) in implementing a company-wide energy-saving project. Russian Railways is the country’s largest employer and carries about 1.3 billion passengers each year. It implemented a process of modernisation with the aim of lowering costs, improving the quality of its services and introducing environmental protection measures across the board. This included analysing the energy-saving potential of railway stations and other building stock and providing employee training. Knowledge transfer for staff in relevant posts at major railway hubs such as Moscow, Murmansk and Sochi made it possible in future to identify energy efficiency projects and evaluate and select technical solutions locally.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • Consultants advised RZD on introducing ISO 50001 (energy management systems). The consultations were based on comparative studies on energy related activities in different sectors of the company (benchmarking) in order to identify potentials for improvement. Focus was laid on LED lights for energy consumption savings.
  • Possibilities for technologies for combined heat and power (CHP) were examined and studies for comprehensive service products were conducted, in order to transfer the technical and financial risks for measures on energy and cost efficiency to external energy suppliers (Contractor, ESCO) in the long term.
