Support for IRENA’s SIDS Lighthouses Initiative
A low-emission energy sector is one of the basic prerequisites for a climate-friendly society. This project was contributing consulting services, technical support and other measures to the Small Island Developing States Lighthouses Initiative from IRENA. For countries located on small islands, the initiative provides a framework that helps to accelerate the transition to a low-emission and sustainable energy supply for the energy sectors in member states. The project was also developing financial models for renewable energy sources as well as implementing pilot projects in renewables. Project results were being shared with island states other than the project countries via IRENA’s Global Renewable Energy Islands Network (GREIN), where they are also promoted the expansion of renewables.

- Project completed.
- The Initiative brought together SIDS members and partners, including bilateral, multilateral, public, private and nonprofit organisations, to provide support for SIDS members in advancing renewable energy (RE) deployment.
- 51 partners (36 SIDS and 15 other partners) and 19 stakeholders joined forces to work towards: (i) deploying RE systems; (ii) mobilising financial resources and investments in RE; (iii) developing RE roadmaps and RE-enabling frameworks.
- The project provided a platform for the strategic deployment of RE and supported SIDS members in accessing knowledge, tools and services to facilitate planning and implementation of RE in line with their NDCs: Quickscans (20 completed), RE Readiness Assessments (RRAs, five completed), RE Roadmaps (six developed), Grid Integration Studies (seven completed), Project Navigator Island Modules and the Sustainable Energy Marketplace.
