Sustainability of the Miombo Ecoregion through the Enlargement and Improved Management of Protected Areas
The aim of the project was to help set up the West Lunga National Park in Zambia and new protected areas surrounding it. It served to maintain forests as carbon reservoirs as well as to preserve their biological diversity. In response to fire hazards in the dry evergreen forests increasing due to climate change project partners also carried out measures to prevent and control forest fires.

State of implementation/results
- Project completed Support provided in the establishment of protected areas covering 4,643 km²; proportion of dry evergreen forest with designated conservation status increased from 4.5% to 16.9%
- Additional annual carbon sequestration amounting to 2,413 tonnes in the area of all protected areas in the dry evergreen forest ecosystem (6,000 km²); total carbon inventory of the protected areas amounts to approximately 34.3 million tonnes
- Awareness raised among decision-makers and the wider public of the importance of improved forest and protected area management, and corresponding knowledge imparted
- Infrastructure for protected area administrations set up, equipment procured
- Financial Sustainability Scorecard developed for the West Lunga ecosystem
