Towards an Indigenous Climate Action Plan

The livelihoods of indigenous communities in the eastern and western regions of Paraguay are at risk due to land-use changes, particularly for crop cultivation – mainly soybeans – and livestock, exacerbated by irregular clearing and forest fires. This project enhances the climate resilience of 13 indigenous associations. It aims at creating indigenous climate change action plans, which are then implemented with ongoing support in organisational development and technical assistance. Furthermore, the project aims at enhancing political representation, and implementing forest fire monitoring and prevention, all with a strong focus on gender considerations and socio-cultural empowerment for the participating indigenous communities. The project benefits 4,700 people directly and another 47,000 indirectly. Its initiatives can serve as a model for other indigenous territories, showcasing effective measures to foster indigenous community resilience.
