Utilising landscape scale forest ecosystem rehabilitation as a cost effective bridge for the integrated deployment of national land-based mitigation and adaptation strategies
The rehabilitation of forest ecosystems – in an ecologically and socially compatible way and at a larger landcape scale – can provide a bridge while maximizing co-benefits for communities and biodiversity. This project piloted initiatives to optimize the implementation of actions that simultaneously contribute to both land-based mitigation and adaptation strategies via landscape scale forest ecosystem rehabilitation. It achieved this goal by: (1) Identifying national “best bets” for optimizing coherent implementation of land-based mitigation and adaptation strategies; (2) Supporting national policy and programme development that integrates the “best bets”; and (3) Stimulating commitment among decision-makers and investors through global analysis, networking and policy influence.

State of implementation/results
- Project completed.
- Project works on Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) in the context of the Bonn Challenge.
- IUCN is increasingly involved in building global partnerships to promote FLR; in particular the establishment of a new alliance, the "Global Mangrove Alliance", which will be of great importance for the dissemination of knowledge generated by the project.
- In Mexico, the economic analysis of IUCN and TNC provided input for the Yucatan Framework Agreement on Sustainability (ASPY).
- In Uganda, as a result of project activities, FLR recommendations were integrated into the National REDD+ Strategy.
- These recommendations include measures about agroforestry, afforestation and reforestation and the promotion of natural regeneration.
