Western Pacific Sustainable Peatland Management (SAGU) Project

The ongoing degradation and loss of peatlands in Borneo and New Guinea are threatening sustainable development. The project analyses the underlying causes and improves the data available on upland and lowland peatlands. In doing so, it strengthens policy, planning and monitoring for the conservation, protection and restoration of peatlands. By improving institutional structures, it expands conservation education, public relations and training. It enables the local population to actively participate in management and restoration measures. At the same time, the project supports governments in incorporating sustainable peatland management and the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions into their policies.
