Resilient management of strategic ecosystems and biodiversity in Colombia's Pacific and Caribbean regions
The Colombian Caribbean and Pacific regions hold valuable ecosystems and biodiversity capable of boosting climate resilience and livelihoods. However, high poverty rates and limited opportunities hinder effective adaptive management for conservation and sustainable use to face climate change. This project collaborates with communities and institutions to adaptively manage their strategic ecosystems by integrating instruments, new knowledge and economic opportunities for climate and biodiversity protection. This approach strengthens decision-making processes in multilevel governance schemes, enhances relevant information systems, enables access to financial mechanisms and promotes local green businesses. These efforts contribute to fulfilling Colombia's climate change and biodiversity goals.

State of implementation/results
- In May 2025, the second annual project planning and monitoring workshop was held in Bogotá. The overall objective was to review progress, identify obstacles, and adjust activity packages to ensure implementation and the expected impacts for the subsequent years.
- The second Strategic Committee Meeting took place in March 2026, with the participation of beneficiary communities.
- The directive committee has continued to meet to review implementation and the effective fulfillment of each consortium partner´s commitments to the project.
- Within the framework of the seagrass and mangrove components, the social and ecological assessment was completed, and participatory process to define mangrove areas was carried out. Regarding the waste component, a methodology was designed to assess the context, and key stakeholders in the value chain were identified and mapped, allowing for the prioritisation of the enterprises that will benefit.
- Regarding project components Sustainable economic opportunities: 89 opportunities were identified and prioritised: 17 ecotourism initiatives linked to conservation, environmental education, and community tourism; 19 solid waste management initiatives aligned with the circular economy and the reduction of environmental impacts; 9 gastronomic initiatives based on local products and short value chains; 39 agroproductive, livestock, cultural, and sustainable fisheries value chains, all with high potential for the bioeconomy and the sustainable use of biodiversity; and 5 initiatives for marketing green products or services. This classification demonstrates that the project portfolio is diverse and aligned with the triple-impact principles (environmental, social, and economic) that define green businesses in Colombia.
- For the Information systems component: The seagrass system SISPAM, was designed as a new module of the Marine Environmental Information System (SIAM).
- The Choco region a community-based mangrove monitoring network was implemented, with the installation and demarcation of 60 permanent plots to monitor forest structure and dynamics. The characterisation process was carried out for coconut producers in Nuquí, Bahía Solano, Juradó, Bajo Baudó, and Litoral del San Juan, as well as for vanilla producers in Nuquí.
- In the Montes de María subregion, 20 local organisations and four educational institutions collaborated to develop a participatory climate change vulnerability assessment. Training and outreach sessions were held, strengthening community capacities and land - use planning in the territory.
- The innovation and knowledge management strategy was reformuled on the basis of a “Learning Agenda”, a mechanism that guides reflection, the exchange of experiences, and decision-making throughout the project. Diagnostic tools were adapted into various formats to integrate them into the activities of the implementing partners. The strategy was aligned with the project components and the diagnostic process in Montes de María.
