Resilient management of strategic ecosystems and biodiversity in Colombia's Pacific and Caribbean regions
The Colombian Caribbean and Pacific regions hold valuable ecosystems and biodiversity capable of boosting climate resilience and livelihoods. However, high poverty rates and limited opportunities hinder effective adaptive management for conservation and sustainable use to face climate change. This project collaborates with communities and institutions to adaptively manage their strategic ecosystems by integrating instruments, new knowledge and economic opportunities for climate and biodiversity protection. This approach strengthens decision-making processes in multilevel governance schemes, enhances relevant information systems, enables access to financial mechanisms and promotes local green businesses. These efforts contribute to fulfilling Colombia's climate change and biodiversity goals.

State of implementation/results
- The first Strategic Committee Meeting took place in March 2025.
- In May 2025, the second annual project planning and monitoring workshop was held in Bogotá. The overall objective was to review progress, identify obstacles, and adjust activity packages to ensure implementation and the expected impacts for the subsequent years.
- In August 2025, the director of FPN convened the directive committee, which included the Director of IIAP and delegates from INVEMAR and Forliance. The purpose of this committee was to review the implementation of the project and request coordination and effective fulfillment of the commitments of each consortium partner based on the results obtained so far.
- Under the seagrass component of the project, information-gathering sessions were conducted in San Andrés to assess coverage, ecological status, and carbon stocks, with the objective to develop management guidelines. Regarding the waste component, a methodology was designed to assess the context, stakeholders were mapped, and institutional coordination spaces were created to analyze waste flows.
- Regarding the business opportunities, progress was made in diagnosing tourism and waste-related ventures. Stakeholders were mapped, and a SWOT analysis was conducted to guide the implementation of strengthening strategies. For the restoration mechanism, biophysical and socio-ecological assessments were carried out, and progress was made in agreements with Coralina, the Providence Foundation, and PNNC to prioritize areas for mangrove restoration and monitoring.
- For the information systems component, SIGMA was updated, and progress was made in designing SISPAM, which is a pasture system with national scope.
- The Choco region faces persistent connectivity problems, but IIAP was able to continue implementing its communications strategy through its WhatsApp channel, which is widely accepted within the community. Through this medium, mailing lists have been implemented as complementary tools to keep territorial stakeholders informed about each line of action.
- Significant progress was achieved in stakeholder mapping and developing the environmental directory, including the identification of communication groups, networks, and learning communities, as well as on the conceptualization of the Montes de María Information Geovisor, a geographic repository.
- The innovation and knowledge management strategy was consolidated and disseminated. This facilitates mainstreaming I+KM at different levels: in the territories, in the consortium's work, and in relationships with external stakeholders, generating a common framework for learning and adaptive management.
- Considering the diversity of contexts and partners, a methodological framework adapted to each territory was created. It implements the diagnostic phase, applying tools that allow for understanding local adaptation capacities, identifying innovation opportunities, and linking findings with consortium actions. This collective learning will strengthen adaptive practices and behaviors and will facilitate knowledge exchange at the national and international levels.
