Working to end poverty and aid dependency through agroforestry

Lamuria in Kenya is rural and characterised by poverty. Around 43 per cent of the population live in absolute poverty and 27 per cent are dependent on external food aid during increasingly severe periods of extreme drought. The project establishes agroforestry systems with indigenous tree species and manages them sustainably. The agroforestry systems enables local communities to improve their livelihoods, restore landscapes, and increase their resilience to climate change. Various measures aim to strengthen the capacities of communities, such as establishing a multi-stakeholder platform to effectively coordinate climate-related initiatives. Household climate resilience is improved by the platform, which also facilitates access to finance through carbon markets. Scaling can take place by focusing on sustainable business models, especially in neighbouring communities.
