Current State of NDCs 3.0
The Climate Action Tracker (CAT) is an independent scientific project, funded by International Climate Initiative (IKI), that assesses government climate action against the Paris Agreement temperature goal. Climate Analytics, the NewClimate Institute and the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) are working together on this. In its latest update, released during the mid-year climate talks in Bonn, the CAT warns that the continued lack of progress on climate targets – especially for 2030 and 2035 – is placing the 1.5°C goal at serious risk of multi-decadal overshoot, with severe consequences for people and ecosystems worldwide. Despite the urgent need to halve global emissions by 2030, none of the approximately 40 governments tracked by the CAT have strengthened their 2030 targets – and only 12 have submitted targets for 2035.
These findings not only shape the CAT’s assessment of global climate ambition but also serve as a basis for concrete and country-specific policy recommendations as well as best practices in the formulation of targets. The Brown Bag Lunch provided an overview of the CAT's work, its methodology and specific country examples. Particular emphasis was given to the analysis of the energy sector. The event ended with a discussion among the participants.
