Implementing environmental and social safeguards in post-peace agreement landscapes and projects in Colombia
Balancing nature conservation with the sustainable use of natural resources by local communities is a significant challenge. Safeguards measures help ensure that efforts to protect the environment do not harm communities who depend on the resources for their livelihoods. A key aspect of this is a participatory approach to regional work and project planning and implementation (inclusive conservation). WWF’s inclusive conservation approach acknowledges and supports the rights, needs, visions, voices, and leadership of local populations and communities in the protection and management of nature. This contributes to cocreation and building trust among stakeholders and supporting the long-term success and sustainability of conservation initiatives.
In this IKI Brown Bag Lunch, WWF Colombia shared its experience in implementing environmental and social safeguards as part of its work in two of its priority landscapes: the Amazon and the Orinoquia. Through concrete examples, WWF showcased its approach, lessons learned, challenges, and opportunities in the territorial contexts of these landscapes.
The presentation was followed by a discussion. Thanks to all participants for their contributions and interest!
