Mastering seed sourcing: Identifying, evaluating and selecting sources of quality tree seeds

The RTRP-Seed Masterclass Series is a curated set of expert-led learning events designed to enhance the capacity of restoration practitioners, planners and policymakers in delivering effective and quality tree planting in landscape restoration initiatives. Each session integrates practical knowledge, system-level perspectives and strategic insights to support evidence-based decision making, improve species selection, and optimize biodiversity and restoration outcomes using high-quality planting materials. Through interactive activities, expert guidance and peer learning, participants gain actionable skills, build networks, and strengthen their ability to implement resilient, high-quality tree planting practices.

#Series 3: Tree seed sourcing

Tree seed sourcing is a foundational step in the tree planting and restoration value chain. The quality and suitability of planting material begins with the seed source, with implications for the quality, adaptability, resilience and potential performance of trees established through restoration initiatives. Getting seed sourcing right is therefore critical to ensuring that investments in tree planting translate into quality planting material and successful restoration outcomes.

Yet practitioners often face significant challenges in accessing and using reliable information about seed sources. These include limited information on where seed originates from, uncertainty about source quality and provenance, gaps in knowledge of appropriate seed collection practices, and challenges in documenting and transferring information from seed collectors and providers to nurseries and restoration practitioners. Such information gaps can increase uncertainty in tree planting decisions and undermine the effectiveness of restoration investments.

In the previous masterclasses, we explored approaches for identifying suitable tree species for a location, and prioritizing species based on ecological, stakeholder, livelihood and contextual considerations. Building on this foundation, this masterclass shifts the focus from which species to plant, to where and how to source seeds for those species.

The session will explore practical approaches for identifying potential seed sources, evaluating available information, selecting appropriate sources, and procuring seed for restoration. It will also highlight good practices for seed collection, documentation, information management and traceability, while introducing the broader role of seed systems, quality considerations, seed zoning and enabling regulations.

This masterclass aims to:

  • Strengthen practitioner capacity to identify and select appropriate seed sources for tree planting and restoration.
  • Improve understanding of the key information needed to assess seed sources, including source characteristics, provenance, collection practices and quality considerations.
  • Equip participants with practical approaches for sourcing and procuring seeds while maintaining appropriate documentation and traceability.
  • Promote good seed collection and sourcing practices that contribute to higher-quality planting material.
  • Strengthen awareness of the role of information systems, seed zoning, regulations and other enabling conditions in supporting effective seed sourcing.
