Today diverse events on climate change and adaptation on the African continent are being held as part of the Africa theme day at the global climate conference in Morocco.

According to the climate risk index, last year Africa was the continent that suffered the most from extreme weather events, and it will be in particular focus during the 22nd global Climate Change Conference in Morocco.

Since 2008, the Federal Environment Ministry (BMUB) has been funding climate change and biodiversity projects in Africa as part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). Already 61 projects have been completed, and 88 are in the process of implementation. A particularly notable example, Mali - Pilot programme for an integrative adaptation strategy is intended to serve as role model for other countries in the future.

Mali’s geographical location, in particular, makes it highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. It is very likely that it could be affected by strong increase in temperature, a less reliable precipitation, and generally increased intra-seasonal variability. In order to strategically and sustainably address these challenges, the Mali Ministry of Environment has been working on a National Adaptation Plan Process (NAP) since August. Along with Grenada, it is one of two pilot countries receiving support from IKI involving development of integrative adaptation strategies.

The National Adaptation Plan process was initially mapped out during the 2010 negotiations on the Framework Convention on Climate Change in Cancún, and the details of the technical guidelines for developing countries were specified in 2012. The aim is to both reduce the population’s vulnerability to the impacts of climate change and to integrate aspects of climate change into development strategies and plans at all relevant levels and in all relevant sectors.

The project in Mali is supporting the development of integrative adaptation strategies and specific implementation of adaptation measures. About 100,000 people in the region will benefit from the project through the mainstreaming of adaptation activities in municipal development plans.

Other IKI projects in Africa focus on reducing greenhouse emissions in the transport sector, promoting renewable energy, stabilising ecosystems as the basis for sustainable development and climate change adaptation, marine spatial planning and the protection of African rainforests and targeted reforestation. The total volume of support for all bilateral projects with African partner countries is currently EUR 237.5 million, while the total for regional projects with African countries is EUR 128.8 million. In addition, there are numerous global projects with participation of African partner countries.
