IKI Event at COP30: From Ambition to Implementation
German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider launches three new funding rounds of the International Climate Initiative
At the IKI High Level Event during this year’s UN Climate Conference in Belém, German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider officially launched the first call for project ideas under the IKI Large Grants and opened the next rounds of the IKI Medium Grants and IKI Small Grants.
Carsten Schneider on the launch of the IKI Calls:
“Working together creates trust – between North and South, governments and international organisations, public and private sectors. Germany remains a reliable partner for global cooperation on climate change. It is in our own interest that other countries meet their climate targets. A key pillar of this work is our International Climate Initiative.”
The International Climate Initiative (IKI) supports innovative projects in developing and emerging countries that contribute to climate action and the conservation of biodiversity. These include, for example, projects that promote the energy transition in Egypt, preserve mangrove forests in Indonesia, or help small and medium-sized enterprises in Brazil to reduce their energy consumption.
Panel discussion with leading voices in global climate action
The launch of the new IKI calls directly reflected the theme of the panel discussion that formed the second part of the High Level Event: From Ambition to Implementation. The discussion centred on how ambitious climate and biodiversity goals can be translated into concrete, effective action.
Participants in the discussion, alongside Environment Minister Carsten Schneider, included:
- Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources of Mexico
- Kamran Khan, Head of Sustainable Finance for Asia Pacific (APAC), Middle East and Africa (MEA), Deutsche Bank
- Tariye Gbadegesin, Chief Executive Officer, Climate Investment Funds
- Katie Gallus, Moderator and Geographer
The panel explored, among other topics, how climate commitments can be effectively implemented and how Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) can be realised on the ground. The discussion also highlighted how robust climate strategies can support economic development and create new opportunities for sustainable investment by providing clear policy frameworks.
