New Leadership for the International Climate Initiative

For the first time since its establishment, the International Climate Initiative (IKI) will be led by a dual leadership team.

Since April, Dr Kathrin Blaufuss and Andreas Kübler have been jointly heading the International Climate Initiative division at the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN).

With the new leadership, an experienced duo takes responsibility for one of Germany’s key funding programmes in international climate and biodiversity policy. Both bring many years of leadership experience within the BMUKN, as well as distinct professional perspectives, to the IKI.

“The International Climate Initiative combines ambitious climate and biodiversity action with partnership-based cooperation in developing and emerging economies. Our approach is clear: projects are implemented in the countries where they can be most effective. I look forward to working together with the IKI community to provide fresh impetus for sustainable development worldwide.”
Dr Kathrin Blaufuss
This funding programme stands for practical solutions in global climate action and biodiversity conservation, as well as adaptation to the unavoidable impacts of the climate crisis. Our aim is to support both the climate and local communities. Through strategic development, intelligent networking and transparent communication, we seek to further strengthen the visibility and impact of ‘IKI Germany’.
Andreas Kübler

Experienced leadership for the IKI

The new IKI co-leadership team has held various leadership roles within the BMUKN for many years.

Most recently, Dr Kathrin Blaufuss headed the division for Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Africa and the Middle East, having previously led the Minister’s Office. She brings experience in both environmental and development policy.

Before taking on his current role, Andreas Kübler headed the BMUKN press office. A historian and communications specialist by background, he has been working on climate action, environmental and nature conservation issues within the ministry since 2014.
