The very first IKI Türkiye Workshop in Ankara

Stakeholders from the International Climate Initiative (IKI) came together to align policies for climate and biodiversity action, strengthening Turkish-German cooperation for green growth.

The first IKI Türkiye Workshop took place in Ankara in October 2025, marking an important milestone for climate and biodiversity cooperation between Türkiye and Germany. For the first time, all IKI partners, from government representatives to civil society, gathered to advance joint action on climate and biodiversity. The workshop connected diverse actors to foster the collaboration and policy alignment needed for a more unified collective impact on climate and biodiversity across Türkiye.

Building the IKI community

A key highlight was the IKI Project Marketplace, where participants presented their projects, explored potential synergies, and engaged in dynamic networking.

Designed as a complementary two-day programme, the event combined an internal session for IKI projects with a broader public day, involving a wider range of stakeholders.

The first day brought together the implementing organisations and political partners of ongoing IKI-funded projects to formally establish the IKI Community Türkiye. Around 30 participants from IKI-funded projects, political partners and implementing organizations, as well as the entire IKI Policy Interface Türkiye Team, attended the internal session to share insights, strengthen cooperation and build common understanding across the portfolio.

Wide range of topics

The discussion "Financing the Future: Unlocking Public and Private Capital for Ambitious Climate and Biodiversity Action".

Building on the momentum of the previous day, the next day’s programme placed global climate and biodiversity priorities in a Turkish policy and industry context. The programme consisted of two interlinked sessions, each addressing a different but mutually reinforcing aspect of Türkiye’s low carbon transition.

Co-organised with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Türkiye, the first session was held on the impact of climate and biodiversity. It highlighted Türkiye’s role as an IKI priority country by exploring how stronger partnerships, innovative financing models and inclusive policy making can accelerate climate and biodiversity action. A panel on “Financing the Future: Unlocking Public and Private Capital for Ambitious Climate and Biodiversity Action” delved deeper into these themes by examining barriers, opportunities and solutions for scaling up climate and biodiversity finance. Discussions focused on how well-designed investment frameworks, stronger coordination mechanisms and targeted support can help Türkiye mobilise finance and meet its climate and biodiversity commitments, particularly in connection with the updated NDC.

The Climate Talk "Industry on the Road to Net Zero".

The second session “Climate Talks: Industry on the Road to Net Zero” was co-organised with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Türkiye and AHK Türkiye. This part of the programme focused on how industrial decarbonisation and carbon markets are shaping the climate policy landscape in Türkiye.

The panel "Industrial Decarbonisation: Bridging Policy and Innovation".

A panel on “Industrial Decarbonisation: Bridging Policy and Innovation”  explored how Turkish industry can meet the challenges and opportunities arising from the full implementation of the EU CBAM in January 2026. And another one on “Carbon Markets in Action: Policy, Industry, and Finance” examined the design and implementation of Türkiye’s upcoming Emissions Trading System (TR-ETS), its interaction with the EU CBAM, and the institutional, financial and market frameworks needed to ensure an effective, transparent, and credible carbon market.

Strengthening Coordination and Partnerships

The IKI Türkiye Workshop demonstrated the value of bringing diverse actors together to strengthen coordination, align policy efforts and deepen partnerships on climate and biodiversity action. Over two days, the discussions, exchanges, and networking opportunities helped to clarify strategic priorities, identify practical challenges and highlight the critical role of cooperation in advancing Türkiye’s climate and biodiversity agenda.

The event succeeded in creating a more cohesive IKI Community Türkiye and reaffirmed the partners' commitment to working together for long-term impact. Building on this momentum, future engagements can be even more effective, structured, and impactful, contributing to a stronger and more coherent climate and biodiversity architecture in Türkiye and reinforcing the long-term partnership between Türkiye and Germany.
