Advancing Affordable and Sustainable Housing (AASH)

Rapid urbanization in Nepal is increasing the demand for housing. The construction sector predominantly uses emission-intensive materials, which undermines climate targets and the availability of affordable housing. Bamboo is locally available and low in emissions, yet its use in housing construction remains limited because regulatory frameworks and market structures are still developing.

The project promotes treated bamboo as an affordable building material for urban housing. Housing designs will be further developed and tested in practice. A platform supports research, training, and collaboration along the value chain. Professionals, communities, and authorities strengthen their knowledge in planning and implementation, while a network accompanies the exchange on standards and regulations. Women and marginalized groups participate in training, entrepreneurial activities, and political dialogues. Experiences are documented and made available for replication in other regions.
