Climate Security Mechanism Joint Programme (CSM)

The increasingly severe, interconnected and often irreversible impacts of climate change on ecosystems, biodiversity, and human systems inevitably affect peace as well as human, national and international security. Responding to growing calls for action, the CSM strengthens the capacity of the UN to systematically analyze and address the linkages between climate change, peace and security. The CSM works with partners to advance peace-positive climate action, catalyze climate-informed approaches to peace and security, and build the evidence base. This includes support to UN entities, regional organizations and other partners to bolster the anticipation, reduction, and management of climate-related security risks in some of the most affected regions of the world. In doing so, the CSM provides critical backstopping functions and promotes tailored approaches, multi-disciplinary partnerships, inclusion and gender equality, local ownership, and strong knowledge management and co-generation.

State of implementation/results

    Support to analysis & action in the field
    • 13 initiatives launched to address climate, peace and security (CPS) linkages in climate vulnerable countries and regions.
    • Five advisors in UN field missions and three experts in regional organizations deployed and backstopped.
    • 18+ UN country teams and field missions supported in integrating CPS risks in analysis and strategic planning processes.
    Advocacy, partnerships & convening
    • A Community of Practice of 400+ colleagues from 35+ UN entities established and maintained.
    • An open online platform sharing 450+ events and 100+ resource documents and tools create.
    • Engagement and collaboration sustained across the UN as well as with Member States, regional organizations, research and civil society.
    Knowledge co-generation & management
    • A Toolbox on CPS risk analysis developed.
    • Knowledge pieces produced on climate finance for peace, gender and climate in peace and security, and climate change and mediation.
    • The first-ever integrated learning dialogue coorganized between UN CPS practitioners.
    Capacity building
    • 850 UN and non-UN analysts trained on integrated risk analysis.
    • Dozens of training initiatives developed and delivered, including a scenario game, a course at Columbia University, tailored training for UN field missions, and an open online course (with 3,800+ people enrolled).
