Community-Cooperative Driven Island Decarbonization Initiative (CC-IDI)

Many small island communities depend on costly and unreliable fossil fuels for electricity and transport while being highly exposed to climate change impacts. This project supports island communities in shap-ing their own climate-friendly and resilient future. Local councils are established to bring together residents, local authorities and electric cooperatives to jointly plan practical and realistic solutions. Together, they develop climate action plans that focus on clean energy, sustainable transport and stronger local livelihoods. Training, discussions and case studies strengthen knowledge, participation and ownership, especially for women and young people. The project helps turn ideas into real actions and supports access to financing for priority measures. At the same time, it encourages more islands to adopt this community-driven approach. In this way, the project supports local climate protection, social inclusion and long-term sustainable development.
