Consolidating the Brazilian National System of Conservation Units (SNUC) - LifeWeb
Brazil is home to around 20% of the world’s species and the SNUC preserves this natural heritage. The protected area is currently about four times the size of Germany. The project measured strengthen the capacities of the Ministry of the Environment in the strategic management of the SNUC and also optimised the management and coordination processes of the organisations responsible for SNUC administration. This was done at both federal and state levels. Handouts supported the preparation of management plans. The financing of the SNUC was also sustainably improved through the use of suitable instruments such as compensation payments, and strategic communication measures were created to increase the appreciation of the nature reserves for biodiversity protection among the Brazilian population, industries and government agencies.

State of implementation/results
- Project completed.
- The "Forum of Heads of Protected Areas Agencies" was reactivated and last gathered in May 2022 for coordination of the National Protected Areas System SNUC and necessary exchanges between Department of Protected Areas in the Ministry of Environment (DAP/MMA), the Nature Conservancy ICMBio, and state environmental agencies.
- The Information and Monitoring System for Private Protected Areas (SIMRPPN) was updated and improved with support of the project. In addition to the federal level, the new system now also allows states and municipalities to register private protected areas and to manage the corresponding information themselves.
- More than 40 key actors at local, regional and national level were trained in results-based management as part of a comprehensive capacity development strategy and will serve as multipliers. In total, more than 400 people were trained in results-based management and the training program was institutionalized in the National Protected Area Academy.
- 714 employees from administration, academia and the general public participated in the online course developed by the project on the preparation of management plans for protected areas.
- In November 2021, another training round was completed with 145 protected area staff from the states and municipalities on the application of the web-based tool "Analysis and Monitoring of Protected Area Management (SAMGe)" (samge.icmbio.gov.br), which was developed with support from the project.
- Currently, indicators on equity ("equidade") are being integrated into SAMGe. From 2022, protected areas and their management will also report on this topic.
- A guide to Improving Equity and Accessibility in Protected Areas (cooperacaobrasil-alemanha.com/…) and a guide to the Equity Principle in Protected Area Management (cooperacaobrasil-alemanha.com/…) were published.
- Based on a communication plan, actions to raise awareness for the SNUC among the population and political actors have been carried out since 2018. The activities include the video production "The Value of Protected Areas for the Brazilian Population" (youtu.be/…), "Protected Areas as a Source of Well-being" (youtu.be/…) and "The Value of SNUC for the Brazilian Economy" (youtu.be/…).
- As part of the "Protected Areas as a Source of Well-Being" campaign, an online event (www.youtube.com/…) and an event at Brasilia National Park (www.youtube.com/…) were held in July 2022.
- Other awareness raising activities were carried out jointly with the Semeia Institute: the "SemeiaLive" series of virtual seminars, the publication of the magazine "Parques & Sociedade" (www.semeia.org.br/…), and the Guide for Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Protected Areas. In addition, the project supported the first forum on volunteers in protected areas in collaboration with the Institute of Ecological Research (IPÊ) and the development of an orientation guide of good practices of volunteering and long trails (www.voluntariado.ipe.org.br/…).
