Credit line for the promotion of renewable energies and energy efficiency in Southern and Eastern Africa

The project helped to secure an environmentally-friendly supply of energy in South Africa. It ensured a long-term credit line from KfW Development Bank of EUR 50 m to the Development Bank of South Africa for financing the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm in the Eastern Cape province. With a capacity of 138 MW, it is currently one of the largest wind farms in South Africa. It is expected to save 440,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, which will result in savings of 8.8 million tonnes of CO2 over a 20-year operating period. The project helped reduce the share of coal in South Africa’s energy mix and directly contributed to the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REI4P). Working with the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) programme, the project involved previously disadvantaged groups and helped to remove historical inequalities.
