Enhancing biodiversity and restoring bird populations in wetlands

Driefontein with its swamps, Miombo forests and Kalahari desert areas is an internationally recognised bird sanctuary (RAMSAR). Extreme weather events lead to crop failures and isolated food shortages, further increasing land use pressure. The project restores wetlands as important habitats for birds and resting places for migratory birds. Awareness is risen among the local population about sustainable management of natural resources and adaptation to climate change. Project progress of the renaturation is scientifically recorded by observing selected bird species. In addition, income alternatives are to be developed through vegetable gardens or poultry farming, including the marketing of products. The scientific data (esp. avifauna) are also used to research the effects of climate change on wetlands.
