German Energy Academy (GEA) Jordan

At COP27, the King of Jordan announced a 50 % renewable energy target by 2030. To achieve this, skilled workers with theoretical knowledge and practical experience to design, build, operate and maintain renewable energy and energy efficiency projects are needed. The German Energy Academy (GEA) Jordan should be established as an independent, regionally recognized and financially self-sufficient provider of training and further education on the energy transition. The project sets the basis for the GEA to act independently as a provider of practice-oriented and internationally accredited and certified qualifications for young people in Jordan. Collaborating with the private sector, it tailors training programmes according to the market needs, ensuring gender-responsive designs and safe learning environments for women. The project also supports the GEA to develop an outreach strategy and as well as e-learning formats to attract trainees from the region and allow a broader participation.

State of implementation/results

  • The Jordanian partner institutions Al Hussein Technical University (HTU) and the German Jordanian University (GJU) will jointly transfer the German Energy Academy (GEA) into an independent legal form; the foundation is currently underway. The Amman Chamber of Commerce (ACI) and the two German partners, the German Solar Industry Association (BSW) and ideas-into-energy (IIE) and the Jordanian Ministry of Energy (MEMR) will be represented on the board.
  • The profitability analysis completed in the first quarter and a market study on thematic trends in the energy sector and the competitive situation form the basis for the establishment of the Academy.
  • Since 09/2025, the German Energy Academy has trained a total of 250 people in 10 different practical training courses using IKI funds.
    • One third were female participants.
    • Participants came from Jordan, Palestinian Territories, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
    • The training topics range from energy efficiency, battery storage, installation and maintenance of solar power systems to electric mobility and heat pumps.
    • The duration of the training, ranging from 30 to 240 training hours, depends on the depth of the topic.
