Identifying and supporting local small-scale projects for land management, adaptation and community-led conservation
The Sierra Madre of Chiapas is an important source of freshwater for local communities and the agricultural systems they depend on. Furthermore, it is also essential for the Grijalva Water System. The region is characterized by one of Chiapas' most vulnerable ecosystems, the mountain cloud forest. Unsustainable agricultural practices, deforestation, and forest fires have led to severe degradation, with over 60% of the forest cover lost. This further increases the region’s vulnerability to the effects of climate change. To address these challenges, The project strengthens local resilience through ecosystem restoration and climate-smart agricultural practices. It launches a state-wide call for proposals to identify and support local small-scale projects that promote sustainable land management, ecosystem-based adaptation, and community-led conservation efforts.
