Improved protected area system in Komi Republic
The project helped to protect an area covering 1.63 million hectares of boreal forests in the Russian Komi Republic, including swamp forests along the Pechora River. Over a period of ten years, this work reduced carbon emissions by 1.75 million tonnes. In addition, the project partners developed climate change adaptation measures and an awareness campaign aimed specifically at reducing the occurrence of anthropogenic forest fires.

State of implementation/results
- Project completed
- Studies conducted regarding biodiversity, carbon dynamics and ecosystem-based adaptation measures in forest ecosystems and on emissions caused by forest fires and their impact on vegetative dynamics as well as carbon flux models developed
- Adaptation measures such as reforestation with different tree species piloted
- A total of 65 environmental monitoring stations set up and equipped with eddy covariance stations to obtain precise data on carbon and methane emissions
- A variety of equipment and vehicles procured; training and fire fighting activities carried out
