Just Energy Transition through Community-Owned Renewable Energy Hubs

In South Africa, electricity costs and supply reliability are a challenge for many households. In disadvantaged communities, access to reliable and affordable energy is limited, so community centres can only offer social and educational services to a limited extent. Women and young people are particularly affected. The project supports communities in establishing climate-friendly, locally operated energy hubs. Participants receive training on energy and climate policy, as well as affordable energy solutions. Women and young people are specifically supported to take on leadership and operational roles. In four pilot communities, solar-powered energy hubs will supply community facilities with electricity and offer additional services. This creates new income opportunities and strengthens the local economy. The lessons learned are documented and shared to enable the model to be replicated in other communities.
