Land-Use Planning and Sustainable Biomass Production for Climate Protection

In conformance with the EU Renewable Energy Sources Directive on sustainable production of liquid biomass and biofuels, the purpose of the project was to mitigate the negative consequences of uncontrolled land-use change (greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, negative climate impacts and land-use conflicts) for the purpose of biomass cultivation in Indonesia, Colombia and Brazil. The affected regions were mapped and methods developed for the identification of carbon-rich areas. The project goal was to provide support to decision-making processes in connection with the creation of new and the expansion of existing plantations, in the interests of climate protection and nature conservation. In addition, policy advisory services on land use (LUC/ILUC) were provided and the results were made available to decision-makers in the partner countries as well as at European level.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • Criteria have been established for the project partners in Indonesia and Colombia to create biodiversity and carbon maps; set of recommendations for the biodiversity maps has been prepared, discussed and where necessary improved within the context of a multi-stakeholder process
  • Methods have been tested and further developed for the creation of maps in Colombia (pilot region: Orinoco) and Indonesia (pilot region: RIMBA)
  • Pilot region in Colombia: the carbon content and potential greenhouse gas emissions due to land-use change have been calculated
  • Pilot region in Indonesia: carbon calculations have been carried out
  • Criteria have been determined for how project partners in Indonesia and Colombia can develop 'no-go' areas in line with the EU Renewable Energy Directive; corresponding maps have been drafted
