Support and financing for a low-carbon socially-just transition in South Africa (JTFM)

South Africa has embarked on the implementation of its Just Transition Framework. This project supports and advances its implementation by fostering broad societal consensus for a deep decarbonisation pathway and strengthening ongoing communication on the Just Transition with both citizens and civil society. By establishing the Just Transition Financing Mechanism (JTFM), the project seeks to support economically viable demonstration projects with strong social benefits in regions affected by structural change. The JTFM, managed by the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), aims to mobilise and channel investment towards projects that combine economic viability with tangible social and environmental benefits. The project is closely aligned with the country’s Just Transition Framework and is implemented in direct partnership with the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC), which plays a central role in driving the Just Transition process. It is part of Germany’s partnership with South Africa under the country’s Just Energy Transition Partnership.
