The Eastern Pacific is home to a vast wealth of marine biodiversity, playing a crucial role in regulating the climate, food security and livelihoods of millions of people in the region. However, this area faces increasing threats from overfishing, pollution, climate change and degradation of marine habitats.
The Permanent Commission of the South Pacific (CPPS) has been instrumental in promoting cooperation between countries in the region to address these challenges and strengthen marine-coastal governance. Regional cooperation, coordinated through bodies such as the CPPS, is key to achieving sustainable and efficient management of marine resources, in line with the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
