IKI BBL: Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) – From Concept to Practice

Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) is a people-centred approach that uses ecosystem services to make people as well as ecosystems more resilient in the face of a changing climate. EbA is one of IKI's strategic priorities and has gained even more traction in the past years as Nature-based Solutions for Adaptation. 

Currently 16 IKI projects aim to make a difference in people’s ability to face the effects of climate change through EbA. They can do so by enabling win-win scenarios and connecting ecosystem functionality and people’s needs, lives and livelihoods in a way that is beneficial for both.

However, as any concept, EbA is only as good as its implementation. Four IKI projects active in nine countries in South America and Southeast Asia will share their insights on putting EbA into practice in a “speed” panel.

The IKI supported Friends of EbA (FEBA) network has developed five EbA quality criteria. Ranging from reducing social and environmental vulnerabilities to equitable multi-level-governance, they currently establish the-state-of-the-art in good EbA practice.

Shining light on these criteria, we will explore experiences of the four EbA projects in turning potential into practice, on the ground realities they encounter, approaches they choose and challenges they meet.
