A journey through Latin America and the Caribbean
A total of 151 International Climate Initiative (IKI) projects are ongoing in countries in Central/Latin America and the Caribbean. Many of these focus on transport and urban development, the transition to renewable energy or the transformation of national financial policy. The aim is to ensure that nations and national economies can continue to function effectively, despite rising costs driven by the consequences of climate change. Part of this also involves investment in advanced technologies and reorienting financial markets towards improved sustainability criteria.
Projects for the conservation of forests and biodiversity – such as in the Amazonian rainforest, the ‘green lungs of the Earth’ – are another key focus of work in this region. The IKI is funding many projects that aim to curb deforestation, promote reforestation and protect existing forests – while harmonising the livelihoods of local populations with nature and biodiversity.
IKI priority countries in this region are Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru. In response to the many challenges faced due to climate change, these projects are active in all of the IKI’s funding areas.
