IKI Events 2024

An overview of the events in 2024 at which the International Climate Initiative (IKI) was represented.

In 2024, the International Climate Initiative (IKI) made use of various different formats to enter into dialogue with its stakeholders. These formats included network evenings at major conferences such as the Climate Change Conference or the Convention on Biological Diversity, as well as virtual events like the IKI Brown Bag Lunch series, in which IKI project teams discussed their results with a well-informed specialist audience. Below is an overview of the IKI event highlights in 2024.

29th Climate Change Conference (COP29)

The IKI was active in Baku at the Climate Change Conference in November 2024. Representatives of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA) took the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with key IKI stakeholders. Furthermore, the IKI staged two major events during the COP29.

Leading experts subsequently held a panel discussion on the financing of climate change mitigation. Participants in the discussion were Jennifer Lee Morgan (State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action, Federal Foreign Office), Eva Kracht (Head of the Department for International and European Affairs, Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection), Saliem Fakir (Executive Director of the African Climate Foundation), Anjali Viswamohanan (Asia Investor Group on Climate Change, AIGCC) and Andrea Hurtado Epstein (Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Mexico).

IKI network evening at COP29

Some 90 participants from the IKI community came together for the IKI network evening on the sidelines of the COP29 in Baku. In his presentation, Professor Dr. Niklas Höhne, expert on international climate policy and co-founder of the New Climate Institute, opened the discussion on the mobilisation of financial resources for climate change mitigation and how IKI projects can contribute to this.

The guests were then able to discuss with the representatives of the three IKI ministries and the keynote speaker. Philipp Behrens (BMWK), Nicolas Schäfstoß (BMUV), René Kieselhorst (AA) and Niklas Höhne were available to answer questions, make suggestions and provide feedback - and the audience made very intensive use of this opportunity for personal exchange.

Furthermore, representatives of many other IKI projects were also present at the COP29 - either as organisers of a side event or as panel participants. As a result, the COP29 topic page features an event archive where the individual events are also available for reference. This page also pools the IKI activities related to the COP29 and provides an overview of interesting news and videos.

Bonn Climate Change Conference

Held in the summer of 2024, the Bonn Climate Change Conference provided an opportunity for the IKI to meet up with implementing organisations and experts to pave the way for the COP29. On 10 June 2024, experts came together for an exchange on the topic of “NDCs and the decarbonisation in industries”.

In the evening of the same day, the IKI staged its traditional network event - this time to discuss climate finance. After a keynote presentation by Dharshan Wignarajah, Director of the British team of the Climate Policy Initiative (CPI), representatives of the IKI implementing organisations and friends of the IKI came together for a discussion in what is known as a fishbowl format. Here, participants had the opportunity to take a seat on the podium and raise their questions to the representatives of the IKI ministries: Philipp Behrens (BMWK), Anne Vanselow (AA) and Nicolas Schäfstoß (BMUV). After this, the approximately 90 guests had more opportunities to exchange views and network in an informal framework.

16th Conference on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 16)

The Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is held every two years. The 16th occurrence of the event, referred to as the Conference on Biological Diversity, was organised and staged by Cali in Colombia in October 2024. The IKI was represented at the German stand at the CBD COP 16.

The highlight from the perspective of the IKI was the network evening, which took place in a very special atmosphere in the Botanical Garden of Cali. At this event, 75 participants discussed practical methods to ensure the active inclusion of important stakeholders – in particular indigenous peoples and local communities – in nature conservation actions. The evening offered a dynamic platform for networking and exchanging ideas on biodiversity conservation and the challenges associated with the implementation of the targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).

A fishbowl discussion concentrated on practical approaches to ensuring the inclusion and just participation of all actors in biodiversity conservation. The evening’s other activities included a speed networking session, in which participants were able to exchange ideas and opinions and form new connections in short dialogues.

IKI projects were also active in Cali with their own side events or with experts at events. The CBD COP 16 topic page provides an extensive overview of these events and also presents a summary of the most important results of the conference in a compact format.

Further events with IKI participation

12th World Urban Forum

Titled “It All Starts at Home: Local Actions for Sustainable Cities and Communities”, the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF12) was held in Cairo, Egypt from 4-8 November 2024. Both the IKI itself and many projects supported by the IKI were present at the forum.

A presentation screen in the background displays the title: "IKI Networking Event at WUF 12, Cairo - Sustainable and climate-friendly development of urban areas." A wall slogan reads: "It all starts locally."

LCOY 2024

The IKI held a workshop at the 2024 Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) in Berlin. The IKI session used an interactive format that gave attendees a chance for in-depth engagement with the presentation and projects. The participants had plenty of opportunities to get involved, raise questions and contribute their own ideas.

In the background, two individuals stand near a chalkboard with a projected map labeled "Community Map of Bedo." One of them gestures as if explaining or presenting to the group. The room has large windows on the left, letting in natural light, and the atmosphere appears collaborative and focused.

BETD 2024

The Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD) took place for the tenth time on 19 and 20 March 2024. The conference also offered the IKI a variety of opportunities to present the funding programme and maintain its network with energy transition actors.

IKI Brown Bag Lunch series of events

The IKI also touched on some key topics itself this year with its own IKI Brown Bag Lunch (BBL) format.

Scheduled as a regular lunchtime event, this virtual format offers implementing organisations the chance to provide an informative behind-the-scenes look at their own projects and then talk about these projects with other stakeholders. The format’s target group includes IKI ministries, ZUG and other organisations from the IKI network. The IKI organised four well-attended BBL events during 2024.

Click on the individual event link for detailed information about the topics addressed at each of these 2024 IKI Brown Bag Lunches. Topics ranged from deforestation to issues relating to the financing of climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation.

IKI online seminars

Furthermore, the IKI staged four online seminars in 2024, accompanying its calls. In these events, participants were given the opportunity to obtain detailed information on the individual procedures. For all those unable to attend the events, the IKI recorded the seminars and uploaded them to its website after completion.

The independent complaint mechanism of the IKI (IKI UBM) held a total of eight online seminars at regular intervals to provide detailed information.

Gender Community of Practice

The IKI Gender Community of Practice (IKI G-CoP) is a format to support implementing organisations and improve the transfer of knowledge and experience relating to the implementation of the IKI Gender Strategy and promotion of gender justice in their projects. The IKI G-CoP is a regular and interactive event open to all IKI implementing organisations and is cooperatively staged by the IKI Office of Zukunft – Umwelt – Gesellschaft (ZUG) gGmbH and the IKI implementing organisations.

The relevance of a joined-up approach to gender justice, climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation was underlined by the keen participation of more than 200 participants in the first G-CoP meeting. Based on this potential, two further meetings were held, one on “Building the Community” in June and the other on “The Nexus of Gender and Biodiversity” in December 2024.

The format is characterised by continuous further development and the high level of participation of the attendees. For example, at the December event, five implementing organisations presented their practical experiences and lessons learned, which were subsequently discussed in groups.

Due to the great interest, three further meetings are planned for 2025.
