Impressions of the high-level event of the International Climate Initiative at COP28 in Dubai
This year’s IKI High-level event “Closing the gap: A fast track for climate and green finance” at COP28 in Dubai celebrated 15 years of IKI with a high level discussion and the launch of the IKI Thematic Call 2023.
Keynote statements by State Secretary Stefan Wenzel from the Ministry for Economic Development and Climate Action and UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner set the stage for the discussions. Both speakers underscored the remarkable success of IKI in climate and biodiversity financing. They highlighted the program's unwavering commitment to addressing core challenges related to climate and biodiversity, along with a dedicated focus on fostering multilateral partnerships. Notable collaborations include the Just Energy Transition Partnerships, NDC Partnership, and the UNDP Climate Promise.
The high-level panel discussion ensued featured interactive elements engaging the audience. The panelists emphasized the imperative of directing funds towards the most vulnerable communities. Additionally, they stressed the necessity of adapting financial instruments to effectively address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.
The panel hosted two high-level representation of the two IKI priority countries Indonesia and South Africa, who illustrating how financing can play a pivotal role in facilitating a just transition away from fossil fuels. These case studies of the Just Energy Transition Partnerships demonstrated the tangible impact of strategic financial support in enabling states to embrace sustainable alternatives. The panelists stressed the need to build capacity for a green transition on the ground, strengthen sub-national inclusion and state ownership.
The launch of the IKI Thematic Call 2023 further solidifies IKI's dedication to addressing the pressing challenges of our time and propelling innovative solutions for a climate-resilient and biodiverse planet.
