New IKI projects strengthen cooperation and biodiversity in coastal areas and cities

In funding area I, ‘Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions’, two projects are being launched with China. The interface project brings together IKI projects across the country. It coordinates the exchange of knowledge between the projects and strengthens cooperation between China and Germany. The project supports the framework conditions for reducing greenhouse gases, promotes climate protection measures and fosters mutual learning. This is because political dialogue improves mutual understanding and drives forward ambitious, inclusive climate targets. In parallel, the fifth phase of the Sino-German Climate Partnership is getting under way. This phase also deepens the exchange and cooperation between the two countries in order to find solutions to global climate change. The project organises dialogues at the political level and promotes cooperation between ministries. At the technical level, it facilitates the exchange of experts and connects various stakeholders at academic and student level.

In addition, two new projects are being launched as part of the IKI Medium Grants under funding area IV, ‘Conserving biological diversity’. The first project is being implemented in the Galápagos Islands, where marine pollution and urbanisation pose major challenges. The project strengthens biodiversity in the coastal region and improves the livelihoods of the local population. It promotes the restoration of coral reefs, and native plants are being cultivated on pilot farms to suppress invasive species. The second project aims to strengthen biodiversity in Uzbek cities. There, the diversity of animal and plant species and their habitats is declining. Heatwaves are occurring more frequently and have a greater impact in densely built-up areas. The project involves citizens, civil society organisations and local authorities in jointly implementing measures to protect the climate and nature.
