Peru to raise emissions reduction ambition to 40% by 2030

Peru approves the update of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), while also aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050.

On December 12, 2020, President Francisco Sagasti, Interim Head of State of the Republic of Peru, announced that Peru will increase its emissions reduction target from 20 percent to 30 percent by 2030, in relation to emissions of the projected Business-as-Usual (BAU) scenario. Depending on access to international finance, Peru may even increase its emissions reduction target from 30 percent to 40 percent by 2030 compared to the established BAU scenario. This is also reflected in the update of Peru’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). 

Speaking at the virtual  UN-Climate Ambition Summit 2020, the Head of State indicated that the country joins the call of nations around the world finalizing se the preparation of its National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and completing the update of the National Strategy for Climate Change by 2050. The president further added that these steps would define Peru’s progressive transition towards carbon neutrality, with a strong focus on environmental justice.

To mark the fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement signing, the President reaffirmed Peru’s commitment to face climate change and lay the foundations for climate action that allows us to move forward towards sustainable development and achieve well-being. This, he added, gives the country an opportunity to become a frontrunner in the climate sphere by setting up more ambitious targets that are both realistic and in line with international commitments assumed by the Peruvian State.

Four days later the High Level Commission on Climate Change (CANCC) approved the update of the Peruvian Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), adaptation and mitigation measures that were later officially presented to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This new climate goal includes the participation of all national sectors and stakeholders; national, regional and local government, private sector, and civil society, as it is understood that the articulated approach will allow its effective implementation.

The update of the Peruvian NDC was supported by different initiatives and international cooperation organizations; one of them is the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) through the IKI project “NDC Peru: support to the implementation of the National Climate Change Strategy”, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ).
