The city of Beijing is working on bringing bicycles back to the roads by making cycling more safe and thus convenient. But Beijing is also exploring new ways to make cycling more attractive. Recently, the city's first "cycling highway" was opened, connecting Huilongguan and the Zhongguancun high tech area in Northern Beijing. The three lanes bicycle-only road, which was designed by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport BMCT, is 6.5 km long and offers 6,000 to 8,000 daily commuters safe and fast traveling.

Cycling highways are considered as a complement to on ground cycling and are recently being implemented in various Chinese cities such as Beijing or Xiamen. Proper cycling and walking infrastructure is an important key to life quality and to low carbon transport.

The IKI-project Sino-German Cooperation on Low Carbon Transport continously works with our Chinese partners to exchange on sustainable infrastructure development, effective regulation and on improving road safety to promote low carbon transport in China contributing to the revival of the Kingdom of Bicycle. The project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
