Green technology for hotels: Cooling with cinnamon wood

Tourism in Sri Lanka is booming. In 2013, more than 1.3 million visitors came to the island - this number is expected to triple by 2020. But many hotels use outdated cooling systems with high power consumption and containing coolants that are harmful to the climate. One of the largest hotel chains in Sri Lanka is now modernising its systems, and plans to be carbon-neutral by 2020. In cooperation with the “Green Cooling Initiative”, which is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and funded by the German Environment Ministry (BMUB) under its International Climate Initiative (IKI), the company is installing so-called absorption chillers. This system converts heat into cold by burning wood waste from the cinnamon industry – a big economic branch in the Southeast Asian country. The hotel chain buys the wood waste from cinnamon producers, generating additional income for the producers. Additionally the cinnamon trees are reforested making it a climate-neutral cycle.
