Find funding

At a glance: Funding instruments and open calls

Funding philosophy

The International Climate Initiative (IKI) uses finely tuned funding instruments for its projects. Competitive selection procedures IKI Large Grants, IKI Medium Grants, IKI Small Grants) are the central element here.

With the projects that emerge from these procedures, the IKI places its trust in a wide variety of implementing organisations that bring the highest quality, innovation and extensive experience in the partner countries.

The IKI also makes use of non-competitive selection procedures to set up projects for specific purposes. These include contributions to major multilateral initiatives and funds for the mobilisation of resources as well as the financing of IKI interface offices in the IKI priority countries.

The IKI Strategy 2030 provides the binding framework for the selection and thematic prioritisation of all funding instruments from 2024 onwards.

IKI Invest

IKI promotes a range of various approaches within the scope of IKI Invest beyond the well-known IKI competitions of IKI Compete. This is achieved by contributions into funds. IKI Invest is the primary tool used to strengthen multilateral cooperation on the one hand and to leverage investments in climate action and biodiversity conservation on the other. Particularly, mobilisation of private investments is a central objective of IKI Invest.

Who can we set up funds with?

Eligible partners for IKI Invest are international organisations, multilateral development banks and the development bank KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau), in which the Federal Republic of Germany has co-determination rights as a member/shareholder.
