Energy Efficiency and Cogeneration in Public Hospitals (Pilot Project)

The pilot project implemented measures to increase energy efficiency and make use of combined heat and power generation (CHP) in public hospitals in Chile. Three hospitals have been selected to receive a new cogeneration plant. These were designed and adapted according to the heat and power demands of each hospital. An international tendering process was carried out in order to find the best suited technical solutions. The work of the project included training of local specialists and technicians in equipment maintenance and the diffusion of the results. In addition, efforts were made towards assisting the development of an energy contracting market (ESCO –Energy Service Companies). Thus, the main objective of the project was not just the installation of the cogeneration plants itself, but the promotion of this innovative technology on a public, nationwide level.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed.
  • Three hospitals (in Coyhaique, Punta Arenas and Santiago de Chile) have been chosen and combined heat and power (CHP) systems have been installed and will be monitored.
  • In all three hospitals the personnel has been trained. At international seminars and workshops the project results have been presented.
  • A model contract for energy saving contracting in hospitals has been elaborated.
  • The project is member of the committee for the support of energy efficiency through the ESCO model, which has been installed by the Chilean Energy Ministry.
  • The Chilean Energy Minister Máximo Pacheco highlighted the project as a successful example of the Chilean-German cooperation in Energy at the occasion of his visit to Germany in March 2015.
  • The topic of CHP is getting more and more attention in the Chilean energy policy.
