Microfinance for Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (MEbA)

In Latin America, the implementation of adaptation strategies at the local level was difficult, because there were only a handful of approaches aimed at achieving this goal. This is why smallholders in particular were strongly affected by the impacts of climate change. Therefore, the project sought to support the development and dissemination of microfinance products such as small loans, which were used for climate change adaptation in the affected regions. To this end, the project built up know-how on ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) in the microfinance institutions (MFIs). Using the instruments that have already been developed, the MFIs autonomously granted loans that enabled investments in EbA and increased the income of the borrowers. The project, implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme Panama, also worked with governments and development banks to create a favourable environment for the expansion of the approach.
