Protection and integrated management of coastal and marine biodiversity (TerraMar II)
The proposed project builds on the experiences and lessons learned of the predecessor project “TerraMar”. It support Brazil to improve the conservation and sustainable use of coastal and marine ecosystems, to build resilience against climate change and promote a just transition towards a blue and circular economy. To achieve this, it adopts a multi-level, gender-responsive approach. The project strengthens Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and coastal management. Further it supports the development or revision and implementation of national policies and instruments for the conservation and sustainable use of coastal and marine ecosystems. In addition, the project incorporates several cross-cutting aspects across all project components, including climate change, gender equity, inclusion of indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLC), and capacity development.

State of implementation/results
- In September 2024, the Brazilian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA), TerraMar II and the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) organized a G20 side event on Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) to promote the application of best practices for MSP in G20 countries. In addition, MMA, TerraMar II, and the Interministerial Commission for Marine Resources (CIRM) held national workshops to develop objectives, principles and guidelines for MSP in Brazil, leading to its institutionalisation by federal decree in June 2025.
- In collaboration with the Boticario Group Foundation and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF, TerraMar II supported the MMA and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) in organizing workshops to develop the National Strategy for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Coral Reefs (ProCoral) and the National Action Plan (PAN Corais). ProCoral was formally established by federal decree in June 2025 and presented at the UN Oceans Conference. (www.gov.br/…)
