Transforming Agricultural Supply Chains to Deforestation and Conversion-free in Latin America
Deforestation is a key driver of climate change and global biodiversity loss, much of which is linked to the production of certain agricultural commodities destined for global markets. As a major consumer of these commodities, the EU aims to minimise deforestation and land degradation from global agricultural supply chains. With the EU Deforestation Regulation entering into application, importers of key agricultural products to the EU must demonstrate that these did not result in deforestation. The regulation has implications for all supply chain actors of the targeted commodities. To fulfil the legality, sustainability and traceability requirements, the project supports supply chain actors in four Latin American countries to improve their enabling policy and governance environments, enhance their capacities to use innovative monitoring and traceability approaches, catalyse financial resources, and share experiences and knowledge regionally and globally.

State of implementation/results
- During the preparatory phase, missions to the four partner countries Bolivia, Honduras, Colombia and Brazil engaged stakeholders at local, national and international levels. Based on identified needs across target supply chains, the project defined specific intervention regions and tailored packages of measures.
- On November 19th 2025 at the UN Climate Change Conference in Belém, the implementing organisations and partners GIZ, WWF and Solidaridad announced the project´s approval during the side event "Building bridges between sustainability, inclusion, and the market: the role of socio-environmental indices in family farming".
- Several project studies addressed key data gaps: Germany/EU market assessment; an analysis of effective “sustainable concern” mechanisms under the EUDR; a mapping of existing approaches and digital platforms for deforestation and conversion-free (DCF) value chains; and an assessment of digital infrastructure and traceability in the four implementation countries.
- A Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) System was established, including an update and comprehensive assessment of previously collected data to align baselines, indicator definitions, and data quality standards for the implementation phase.
