Accelerating an energy transition in Southeast Asia

The energy transition in Southeast Asia is picking up speed.

The recently launched Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (ETP ) takes further shape and IKI project CASE is providing support.

Southeast Asia is one of the fastest growing regions in the world, with energy demand projected to increase by 70% by 2040 compared to 2015. The share of renewables in Southeast Asia’s power sector needs to be rapidly scaled up in order for the region to move towards achieving a clean, affordable and secure energy transition in line with the Paris Agreement’s goals. Diversifying the energy mix by including more renewables also helps to increase the reliability of power supply, contribute to increased stability of prices, and enhance energy security.

It is also expected to play a significant role in driving new more sustainable economic growth source of innovation and job creation thereby contributing to recovery from the current global crisis.

The Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership

The Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (ETP) was launched in late 2020 - and the initiative has been taking speed since then. Aiming to support a sustainable energy transition in Southeast Asia, the consortium consists of governmental and philanthropic donors. At first, the partnership will focus on Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines – countries with significant coal consumption – but aims to enhance this effort throughout the region.

Matching interest and vision, the IKI-funded project “Clean, Affordable and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia” (CASE) is implemented under the ETP. The CASE project is geared to facilitate a socially, economically, and environmentally friendly energy transition, and was developed to be one of the flagships initiatives under the ETP’s framework.

Besides projects that it will initiate and fund directly, the ETP also aims to work through “aligned programmes” such as CASE, which will be implemented in close cooperation with ETP and contribute to joint objectives.

Working in the three countries mentioned above as well as Thailand, CASE is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and expert organisations in the area of energy and climate change to drive a sustainable transformation of Southeast Asia’s energy systems.
