Seven Projects supported by the Mitigation Action Facility progress to the next stage of development, aiming to drive decarbonisation across key sectors in six partner countries.

Supported by the IKI

The Mitigation Action Facility – a multi-donor climate finance programme – provides technical assistance and funding to help implement ambitious mitigation actions. The Facility supports decarbonisation in sectors such as energy, transport, and industry. One of its core donors is Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), which channels support via the International Climate Initiative (IKI).

From Concept to Implementation

Starting from 2023, Calls of the Mitigation Action Facility are structured with the following consecutive and competitive phases :

  • a Project Concept Phase,
  • a Project Outline Phase,
  • a Project Proposal or Detailed Preparation Phase (DPP),
  • and an Implementation Phase.

Entry into the DPP marks a major milestone, as projects now receive tailored technical support and funding to develop full proposals. This phase involves in-depth research, stakeholder consultations, and project refinement – typically over 10 to 15 months – guided by advisors from the Technical Support Unit (TSU).

Overview of Projects Commencing DPP in Spring 2025

Seven projects selected during recent Calls are due to progress to the DPP this spring. Details about the projects are as follows:

  1. Bhutan - Solar Power: Installation of 30 MW of solar PV and support for regulatory reforms  to accelerate activity in the country’s renewable energy market.
  2. Brazil - E-Buses Industry: Replacement of 1,739 internal combustion engine (ICE) buses with electric buses across three cities.
  3. India - Industrial Clusters: Rapid, cost-effective decarbonisation of the manufacturing industry in India, focusing on the SME sector.
  4. India - Steel: Acceleration of low-carbon and energy-efficient technologies in steel production.
  5. South Africa - Steel: Piloting a hydrogen-based direct reduced iron (H2-DRI) plant and installation of solar PVs to increase supply of clean power for steel production.
  6. Türkiye - Cement: Promoting energy efficiency and low-emission materials in cement production processes.
  7. Vietnam - Sustainable Industries: Supporting 300 facilities in the textile, apparel, and food and beverage sectors to implement decarbonisation measures.
