Restoration of Saint Lucia's Ma Kote Mangroves

Local students, community members and government agencies joined The Nature Conservancy and project partners to plant over 4,000 red and white mangrove seedlings in Saint Lucia’s largest mangrove forest. Mangrove ecosystems are threatened by development and pollution, but they are critical in the Eastern Caribbean. Their complex root systems protect the coast from storms and provide safe nurseries for juvenile fish, lobster and other species. In Saint Lucia, mangroves also support sustainable businesses such as horse and kayak tours, as well as sustainable charcoal harvesting. The reforestation effort was part of the Climate-Resilient Eastern Caribbean Marine Managed Areas Network (ECMMAN) Project.
