Promoting Ecosystem based Adaptation through Friends of EbA (FEBA)

The concept of ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) seeks to use biological diversity, natural resources and their ecosystem services in such a way that the ability of people to adapt to the impacts of climate change is increased. Friends of EbA (FEBA) is a global network of stakeholders and organisations involved in the implementation of EbA and its integration into policy making. The supporte of the network promoted a mutual learning process and the exchange of experience between these organisations with the aim of making EbA more effective, and and to highlight its added value as a green and effective alternative to so-called "grey" adaptation measures based on structural solutions such as insulations. In this way, adaptation strategies were enriched and improved, both in the planning processes and in practical implementation on national and regional levels, but particularly on a global level (UNFCCC, Nairobi Work Programme).

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed.
  • More than 100 organisations and more than 275 individuals cooperate on EbA topics through the FEBA network.
  • The FEBA Twitter, @FriendsofEbA, actively engages FEBA members and EbA community members to publicise EbA.
  • The CBD COP recognizes FEBA as a key partner “to support Parties in their efforts to promote ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation” (Decision 14/5)
  • The project has contributed to the development and publication of the EbA E-Learning Course (see link)
  • Support of the UNFCCC secretariat in developing the synthesis report on climate change and ecosystems, as well as in the Scoping Paper on Adaptation Knowledge and Knowledge Gaps on the Ocean, Coastal Areas and Ecosystems
  • Development of standards and quality criteria for EbA
  • FEBA has several active expert working groups collaborating on thematic topics. More information about FEBA is available at www.FriendsofEbA.com, which hosts member organisation information, recent publications, past and future events, and more.
