Support for SDG Review and Implementation Processes (SDG-RI)

In 2015, international community set itself an ambitious plan for sustainable development with the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To achieve the goals, policy programmes need to be developed that span across different sectors and industries, impact on all levels of government, and have broad societal support. The project therefore strengthens national review, dialogue, and implementation processes on the 2030 Agenda/SDGs, paying special attention to synergies with national strategy processes on environment, biodiversity, and climate. To this end, it supports learning and diffusion processes in global networks/partnerships, provides conceptual work (studies, analyses) on the implementation and strengthening of synergies (SDG-Helpdesk) and offers specific advice on integrated policy approaches for selected partner countries (China, Colombia, Indonesia) so that effective Agenda implementation can progress.

State of implementation/results

Since the project’s inception, the initiative has been producing demand-driven brief reports and policy studies to contribute to the political debate (to date, on topics including: SDG progress measurement, municipal and local sustainability policy, integrated implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), long-term strategies, risk governance, biodiversity, and stakeholder engagement).
Multilateral: In cooperation with the United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), the project supports the preparation and consultation process for the 2027 Global Sustainability Development Report (GSDR). This work has strengthened cross-sectoral policy approaches for sustainable development in Asia and Latin America.
Advising the BMUKN on engaging German stakeholders in SDG policymaking through the 8th German High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) Conference (April 16, 2026) and the German delegation to the HLPF 2026 (July 7-16.2026).
Together with Brazil and other partner countries, Germany supported the exchange of views on honest and ambitious reporting on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Together with 14 other countries, the exchange of experiences continued. This resulted in a strong alliance committed to better implementation and more transparent reporting on the SDGs. This collaboration increased international attention to the issue at the HLPF 2026.
Latin America: In collaboration with UN Women, a training program was implemented for approximately 20 women in leadership and negotiation roles for multilateral processes in the areas of sustainability, climate, and environmental policy.
Colombia: Together with the National Planning Department (DNP), a white paper for the post-2030 era was developed. It brings together new ideas and perspectives from the region. In it, experts and thought leaders are working on proposals for the future. This generates important momentum for international cooperation and the further development of the global Sustainable Development Goals beyond 2030.
India: Together with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), a workshop was organised to discuss voluntary national reports on the Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, the project supports the government of the state of Uttar Pradesh in better coordinating and transparently documenting progress in implementing the SDGs.
Indonesia: The project supported the federal ministry in preparing the launch of new guidelines on child protection. The focus was on disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change.
