A Youth Network for marine conservation
In our series “Youth Empowerment and Action Highlight” – or IKI YEAH for short – we present successful initiatives from IKI projects that empower young people to engage in sustainable transformation. In this edition, we take a look at a Youth Network for marine conservation.
In November 2024, the IKI project “Save the Blue Five” held a regional conference with key stakeholders of relevant sectors from the Southeast Pacific region. In the context of the conference, 30 young professionals working in marine-related fields were selected to participate in a three-day workshop organised by the project.
The workshop aimed to promote the active participation of young people in decision-making processes to enhance ocean conservation and resulted in the creation of a Youth Network.
Results
The Youth Network “Red de Juventudes por el Pacífico Sudeste” was established with the purpose of connecting and strengthening the youth of the region to support conservation and sustainable use projects, actively participate in international decision-making processes and promote young people as key actors in ocean conservation.
To date, the network is part of a mentorship program with Blue Leaders from the region, through which its members strengthen their capacities by exchanging experiences. This opportunity has enabled them to build alliances and actively participate as youth representatives in international events and conferences, such as the UN-Oceans Conference 2025.
Lessons Learned
Young people played a leading role in the process through participatory approaches. Within the network, engagement is structured through monthly meetings in each country and coordinated by six representatives. Communication is maintained through virtual meetings and email, supported social media channels.
Their activities are coordinated through national working groups, each led by a country representative.
Replication Potential
It is important to define a shared vision early on through a collective youth statement. Furthermore, creating a sense of belonging is essential. When young people feel recognised and valued, they are more likely take ownership of the process. Establishing strong communication channels helps to manage information and increase visibility. In addition, securing political support can strengthen legitimacy and sustainability, particularly by fostering connections with national and regional institutions.
