New IKI projects launched to reduce emissions and boost biodiversity

Five new projects are now starting in Funding Area I, 'Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions'. In Colombia, one project will support the training of local skilled workers and drive innovation in renewable energy, creating real employment opportunities in the green economy. A new project in Brazil, Ethiopia and Turkey will also strengthen local training programmes and the international exchange of knowledge, creating more green jobs and skills. Another project in South Africa will support communities by providing training and other assistance to help them set up climate-friendly, locally operated energy centres. In Costa Rica, the interface project will continue to support partners in achieving their climate and biodiversity targets. It will strengthen professional exchange and promote knowledge-building and monitoring capabilities, as well as working to improve the enabling environment. The project supporting the implementation of the Paris Agreement will help further develop and implement national climate plans and strategies, record progress transparently and direct funding more effectively towards climate-friendly development. It also strengthens existing global partnerships.

Under Funding Area IV, 'Conserving biological diversity', new projects are underway in Indonesia and Guatemala. In Indonesia, a project has been launched to support local communities, public authorities, civil society and private sector stakeholders in establishing two biodiversity corridors that will link three important forest areas. Through training, participatory planning and modern monitoring techniques, conflicts between people and wildlife are being reduced and livelihoods improved. In Guatemala, a new project is strengthening urban biodiversity and social participation. Degraded forests are being restored, native species are being promoted, and community tree nurseries are being established.
