Farming for Biodiversity
Both land use and agricultural practice must change on a global scale to prevent further losses to biological diversity. This project is conducting a number of measures needed to raise awareness about the value of biodiversity, while also building capacity at a local level to promote the adoption of best practice. As part of a competition conducted worldwide, 338 approaches to ensuring the success of mainstreaming biological diversity into the agricultural sector were chosen, and disseminated in various regions via a knowledge sharing and training platform. Where possible, the approaches are also embedded into political planning processes at a national and international level. A series of workshops is providing selected local stakeholders with technical know-how about the winning mainstreaming approaches as well as social marketing techniques, which are essential for the promotion of local campaigns to strengthen biodiversity in the agricultural sector and change established practices.

State of implementation/results
- Project completed.
- Based on the over 300 solutions sourced in 2017, Rare and its partners ran technical agricultural and behaviour change trainings, called Campaigning for Conservation (C4C), in Benin, Bolivia, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mexico, Nepal, Peru and Vietnam.
- As a result, 38 local solution providers are running local and regional campaigns based on locally produced social marketing materials to promote the desired behaviour in Benin, Bolivia, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, and Vietnam, as well as in Mozambique, Chile and Colombia.
- Based on the results of these campaigns, Rare is compiling a learning report that builds on insights from the 38 campaigns and their various proven local solutions. Rare and its partners are engaging in the CBD Post-2020 process to build a critical mass of local leadership and global commitments around ambitious agriculture-related targets in the development and implementation of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.
- Preliminary results show that the campaigns reached 43,000 target audience members, and more than 570,000 wider community members, including both producers and consumers, across twelve countries, calling on them to support the transition towards biodiversity-friendly agriculture. The goal is to empower local solution providers to scale their solution beyond its local impact by working with key influencers and decision makers in increasing biodiversity outcomes in small scale agriculture and its value chain.
- In Summer 2021, and using the project results and lessons-learned, the project partners are looking forward to engaging partner governments, policy makers and practitioners in a virtual bright spot event in the lead up to the UN CBD COP15 and UN Food Systems Summit. (rare.org/…).
